Why support working carers?

Recruitment and retention

Workforce predictions tell us that the economy will need an additional 2 million people in the next 20 years.  At the same time, it is predicted that there will be an increase in the need for care with as many as three out of every five people in the UK caring at some stage in their lives.

In Scotland, there are over 600,000 carers with 250,000 holding down a paid job.  It is vital for organisations to put in place flexible and practical support to enable carers to continue to work while retaining carers' essential skills and knowledge.

Business case

A small change in working hours or flexible arrangements can make a difference to both the carer and your organisation.  Increased flexibility will help attract and retain essential skills, increase productivity, cut costs and release the potential of your organisation.

Employers for Carers is a partner in the ACE National project working as part of an integrated partnership, which includes the public, private and voluntary sectors as well as Government departments.  The partnership aims to address a wide range of issues affecting carers who work and want to work.

Visit the Employers for Carers website for more information on the business and economic cases for employing carers and view case studies from major employers
