Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000

The course will commence at 10:00am (tea/coffee available from 09:45am) and will finish at 4:00pm. 

The cost for this one day course is £90 - voluntary sector, £120 - statutory sector, £120 - commercial sector.  These costs include a light lunch. 

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide participants with an understanding of the Adults with Incapacity Act 2000, the background to it, and the mechanisms introduced by the Act to enable intervention to ensure the welfare of an adult with incapacity and help with managing finances.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a full understanding of the fundamental principles that enshrine the act and how they apply to those who are granted powers to intervene in the finances or welfare of an adult with incapacity.
2. Understand the role of the Office of Public Guardian.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Continuing Power of Attorney. 
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Welfare Power of Attorney.
5. Understand the measures available to access the funds of an Adult with Incapacity in order to pay bills etc. on their behalf. 
6. Understand the new rules introduced by the Act in respect of medical treatment for adults who are unable to give consent. 
7. Understand the purpose of Guardianship or Intervention Orders, who can apply, how to apply for these and the responsibilities on those granted such Authority.

Level

Suitable for advisers, carers' workers, social workers, care managers and health services staff.   This course is aimed at those providing information to carers of adults who have an incapacity, which affects their ability to make decisions about their own welfare including financial, medical and general welfare issues.
