Equal Partners carer mentioned in Parliament

13 June 2007

Jill Pay, the carer thrust into the spotlight when Gordon Brown launched the New Deal for Carers earlier this year again made history when she was mentioned in a parliamentary debate.

Ministerial mention

Its not every day your name comes up in the House of Commons - Jill Pay is getting used to fame.  Minister for Care Services Ivan Lewis mentioed Jill when he spoke in a debate on carers to mark Carers Week:

"Then there is Jill Pay, whom the Chancellor and I met when we launched the new deal for carers recently. She looks after her daughter Rowan, who has severe learning disabilities, and is supported in doing so by her eldest daughter, Camilla..Jill and Camilla's spirit, tenacity, courage and flair are inspirational, but their frustration and anger at the system must be a wake-up call to us all."

Speaking at Carers UK Event

Jill also spoke at the first of our events for carers to have their say on the New Deal for Carers and question the minister Ann McGuire. Jill said "I was actually quite overwhelmed by the number of carers there, especially hearing the real difficulties they are facing and the lack of support they experience."

Campaigning tips

  • If you're lobbying your local MP encourage them to take a Carers' Challenge - visit local carers or hold a dedicated surgery looking at carers issues.
  • Local carers' case studies add interest to media stories, if you're issuing a press release or trying to raise awareness with your local papers, including a carer for journalists to interview may help get your story mentioned.
